Contemporary Home, steel beams
Blank-Menzel Residence
Coupeville, Whidbey Island
Paul Menzel and Susan Blank's new home
is sited on a lagoon with views of Puget Sound and Mt. Baker. The process we have gone through includes programming
and the development of five very different concepts that challenge an art teacher and philosophy professor, as
well as the architect, to stretch their imaginations and really examine the craft of architecture.
Paul and Susan chose a scheme that we
defined as "The Primitive Hut with Bermuda Roof". This concept features a simple square form for the
main house with a rotated "lighthouse" and detached garage.
The forms are an exciting, and at the
same time serene, compound in the woods.
The home features energy efficient SIPS
panels, steel frame, a curved glass wall, concrete floors and a geothermal heating system. Paul and Susan have
filled their house with art.
