Wallace Residence
Gig Harbor, WA
Ken & Sally Wallace had lived comfortably
in their home for over 20 years. But their home was aging and they needed more room to accommodate Sally's thriving
business and a "great room" they had always dreamed of. The Wallace’s searched extensively for a home
that would meet their needs but found none that could rival their location overlooking the Tacoma Narrows.
Not only did they want to add space,
they also wanted to change the basic look of the house to a more lodge-like style. They cited the WPA projects
of the 30’s as examples. We designed a 1200 SF room above a portion of the existing home to act as a family “great
room” and to free up space on their lower floor for Sally's business. An enlarged entry provides a more generous
feel and includes an open stair to the family room. Exterior siding and new windows tie the addition to the existing
house. Log columns, stone and natural wood finishes all add to the warmth of the home. Decks at each end of the
great room provide outdoor spaces for enjoying a summer afternoon drink or a view of the Narrows Bridge.
